We were extactic at the luxury of a window let alone a bath, dressing gowns, majorly comfy beds and posh decor. We spent our first day there registering on the British Council's TET program which included signing forms, getting a ETA polo shirt and a good old fashioned phone with a Thai SIM card.
I had to spend a few days fiddling with my new phone until we made friends. I've got too used to the luxury of touch screen and three letters to a key just isn't working for me. Luckily it's only 1 baht to make a call and 2 to text so phone calls it is!
After getting settled in our rooms a group of us walked to Terminal 21, a shopping centre with an airport theme and a different city on each floor! We had a little drama on the walk there when Joy dropped some rubbish on the floor and got fined 1,000 baht (£20) by some uniformed 'security guards'. We were told by a passer by when she was trying to reason with them that it was a scam and they weren't actually police or security. However Joy had made the mistake of handing over her passport when asked so she had no choice but to pay in order to get it back! Oops!
Anyway, we had a great time looking around the shopping centre, I'm not sure that we actually went in more than 2 shops because just looking around the floors was fun itself. My highlight has to be the London Underground themed toilets. Jolly good.
As well as the free room for 2 nights at the Ambassador, we also got complimentary lunch and dinner (Korp kun kah British Council!!). After dinner myself, Joy, Deeni and Henry decided to get the BTS sky train to the Sky Bar that was featured in the Hangover 2 film.
The view of Bangkok was incredible. The atmosphere was incredible. The price of drinks was incredible. We had seriously fallen away from the backpackers cheap and tacky paradise of Khao San Road! I definitley think the sky bar is a must see if you find yourself in Bangkok. Although there is a strict dress code which is pretty much just cover up and look smart. A top tip would also to go early! We were there at around 7pm and it wasn't too busy so we could walk around and have space to get a good look at the view and have a cheeky photo shoot. It did start to get busy while we were there and I think it would be rammed later at night!
After our taste of luxury we did what all students do best and returned to find the cheapest bar. This just so happened to be a VW street bar.
So you sit in the road and drink cheep beers next to a neon VW camper whilst taking in the sweet smell of car fumes and pollution. Nice... It was actually quite good though, we got chatting to a French couple who were very nice but obviously compulsive liars as they told me my French was decent! Merci, mais je ne pense pas!
I'll leave you with Joy having some road side beer Chang fun.
